Fence post rotting out?
Get to Grips and Replace Immediately.

Fence post rotting out is the greastest threat to your fence. Rotten posts are dangerous and can weaken your fence to such an extent that it no longer can fulfill its purpose. Removing posts that are set in soil is reasonably easy. Posts that are set in Postcrete or concrete, will require a little more effort.

In order to remove a post:

  1. Dig around the post and remove the soil from the base of the post.
  2. Drill a series of holes in the post just deep enough to allow the chisel end of a crow bar to get a good hold for leverage purposes.
  3. Place bricks or wooden blocks at the base of the post to act as a fulcrum for your crowbar.
  4. Place the chisel end of your crowbar in the predrilled holes and using the bricks as a fulcrum, lever the post upwards out of the ground.
If the post still refuses to move, continue digging around the base of the post and try the lever again. If the inevitable happens and the post refuses to cooperate dig it out completely. If the post is set in concrete, use a chisel and lump hammer to break up the concrete, piece by piece. Better still, hire a small Kango hammer to break up the concrete, if it proves to be very troublesome.

To ensure lasting fence post protection always use pressure treated 'Tanalith E' timber.

Warning: Posts that are rotten may break at any time. Always be prepared for the post to give way suddenly during any leverage operation.
